Frequently Asked Questions

You sign the release form saying that you are familiar with this information, please read carefully.

How do I get started?
Write, as indicated above.
A Release of Liability Form & instructions will be sent to you via email.  For privacy reasons we do not give any addresses on the web.

I can't seem to put in an order on the web, how do I do it?
You must submit orders to Kim at
orders(at)justdairy.org(Replace the (at) with @)

How much does the milk cost?
Effective 3/1/08 prices are $6/gallon & $4/half gallon.

What type of dairies do you buy milk from?
Milk is from dairies that are pasture-based only.  Organic certification isn't the most important aspect of this milk, pasture-based is.  Farmers that have the consciousness to let their cows roam are organically minded and seem to use natural cow care and wouldn't subject their cows to conventional methods.  They really like their cows!

Where are you located?
Belmont, Brookline, Cambridge, Cambridge Inman Square, Medford, Essex, Hamilton, Manchester, Topsfield, Revere, Rockport, Roxbury, Newton, Newton Centre, & Swampscott.

What if I want raw milk but don't want it from Just Dairy?
I can assist you in joining in with other groups that are smaller than Just Dairy.  You may need to drive to the farm from 8 to 12 times average per year.

What if I live too far away and I don't see any geographical areas where I can be a part of the buying club?
I can put you in touch with others who have written to me from your area and you can work on organizing your own car pool to highly recommended dairies.  I will help you get a car pool going if you like.  Or you could periodically get milk from the nearest distribution point, get extra and freeze it.

Where does the milk come from?
Depending on your location and the time of year, the milk comes from either Rocky Acres Farm or Robinson Farm or both.  Both are pasture-based dairies.  www.robinsonfarm.org.

I didn't make an order this week and I am being charged, why is this?
Once you join in the buying club, you need to establish a "standing order" . . . that is what you would like to order every week.  Your standing order can always be cancelled or changed.  We are not able to accept orders submitted from week to week from individuals.

How long must I commit for with Just Dairy and what if I need to leave?
We ask for month-long commitments to which changes can be made if necessary.  If the monthly standing order needs to be changed, we encourage changing it at the beginning of the month.

Does Just Dairy recycle?
We always return clean, sturdy, stacked egg cartons to the farmer.  He can reuse them at least four times before they fall apart.  He depends on these to keep his prices down.  Please return them to your pick up spot.
If you get any products in glass jars, please return them to your pick up spot.  Misty Brook Farm charges a $2 deposit on jars not returned.

How can I pay Just Dairy or Brood Food?
Payments can be sent by mail, ask for the mailing address via email.  Credit card payments for Just Dairy and for Brood Food are made on www.broodfood.com.  In the member catalog, there are items that are listed as "Incremental Pre-Pay"  just choose your quantity.

Can I freeze the milk?
Yes, freezing slightly affects the nutrients, make sure it is completely thawed before drinking!  Some folks pack frozen milk jugs in their suitcases while traveling.

How long will my milk "last?"
40 degrees F and below in your fridge is the secret.
I've had experience with unopened milk staying fresh for up to 3 weeks.  The amount of time any gallon will last depends on the environment and temperature of each individual milk jug.  From the time it leaves the dairy until it reaches you, that jug's temperature would affect how long the milk will last before turning sour.  How many times you open your milk each day affects how long it will last before turning sour.  The amount of time you leave it out at meal times would affect it also.

Unlike pasteurized milk that rots when it is no longer fresh, unprocessed milk simply turns sour.  Sour milk is known for its own nutritional benefits.  It is especially wonderful in baking.  If you know about Nourishing Traditions, you will use it to soak your flour or grains before use.

Will you continue to grow the group or do you get filled up?
I will do what is necessary to welcome all who would like to have state permitted, unprocessed milk.  The group may need to be rearranged every now and then in order to do this.

I have given you enough money to cover my orders for quite awhile.  Why does the activity report come up with a debit balance in parentheses?
Unlike most of the accounting world, Just Dairy operates on a pre-pay system.  So it is actually a credit balance that you are seeing with a minus sign in front of it, not a debit balance.  If your activity report ends with   -$94.00 that means you have $94 left in your account to spend on your orders.

I'm hesitant to mail in my check because I am due a credit for a week of missing eggs, is this okay?
No, please mail in your check anyway and we'll address the issue of your credit separately.  You can deduct the price of the missing item from the amount of your check until it is resolved.

I cancelled my order but it still arrived, why is this?
Always wait for a confirmation for any cancellations or changes to your regular standing order.  If you do not get a confirmation, please assume that it was not received and resend.  Thank you.
